If You Like Country Music, Start Here
October 22, 2015
Maddie and Tae’s debut album, Start Here, is a mix of clever wordplay and harmonies similar to the Pistol Annies. The lyrics are funny while still talking about situations any girl growing up could relate to.
Their first single, “Girl in a Country Song” talks about how women are constantly described as objects in country music. They even go as far as quoting some recognizable lines in some popular songs. The two girls’ lyrics express what it’s like to be a typical teenage girl while using blunt phrases.
Lines such as, “I wish I had some shoes on my two bare feet, and it’s getting kinda cold in these painted on cut-off jeans, do I really have to wear it all day?” The songs are not only catchy and beautifully sung, but have an important message to girls about standing up for yourself and self-respect.
They don’t hold anything back while they also talk about bullying in the song “Sierra”. While talking about mean girls they say, “it might not be Christian to be wishing what I’m wishing.” Without using harsh language they get their point across while still making you laugh. The country melodies complement their accents and the guitar strings are played by both girls.
