On October 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Stephen Paddock shot and killed over 50 people from his hotel window.

The last night of the country music festival, Route 91 Harvest Festival, was in full swing when the massacre began. Paddock took aim from the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The incessant noise of rifles lasted for around ten minutes, according to singer Jake Owen who spoke to The New York Times. During this time, over 50 people were killed and another 500 were injured.

Bishop Blanchet students were informed of these atrocities the following morning. Campus Minister Ms. Rachel Longest spoke over the PA system after morning reflection. Her point was not just to inform those who did not yet know, but to remind the Blanchet community to keep all those affected by this tragedy in our prayers. It is important to remember not only those who died, but also those who are recovering from injury, and the families of all those involved.

In times such as these, we are called to stay strong and love our neighbors in an effort to bring peace to our troubled society, and reach out to any who may be struggling.

Be open and friendly to those you see in the hallways, help someone who looks like they need it, greet everyone with a smile — spread God’s love.
