Students at Work
January 3, 2018
At Bishop Blanchet High School many students have to learn how to balance school, homework, sports, family time, social life and working.
There are many pros to having a job during high school such as gaining communication skills, building your resume early, developing a work ethic, learning the value of money, and bettering your time management skills.
“Working at PCC (Puget Consumers Co.) allowed me to interact with people I wouldn’t get to meet anywhere else. I really appreciate the opportunity my job has given me to expand my knowledge so that I can become a more cultured person” said senior Clara Costa.
Having a job can also help students when applying to colleges. Colleges like to see that student have experience outside of the classroom and can handle the pressures of working and attending schools. Many big corporations also provide scholarships for their high school employees. McDonalds, Apple, Ford, Coca Cola and Walmart are a few of the many corporations that provide scholarships.
While having a job has a lot of benefits, it can also have negative impacts on your life as a teenager.
“I work right after school, go straight home, and do homework until I fall asleep. This gives me no time to hang out with my friends or family. I also miss a lot of school activities like basketball games,” said senior Hailey Mears.
